About The Ozarks

The Ozarks region were long controlled by the Osage Nation, claimed by the French, and were under the jurisdiction of the Spanish Crown for several decades. The area became the first "Indian Territory” for Native Americans forced West from their ancestral homelands, crossed by thousands of Cherokees on the final leg of the "Trail of Tears." It was also a major destination for white settlers from Kentucky, the Carolinas, and Tennessee. Following the War of 1812, there was a large migration to the area from the Appalachians, Germany, and the British Isles.

In the 1960s, Amish and other similar populations moved to the area, as well as a large number of retirees lured by a favorable cost of living. The past three decades have seen an additional population influx from other parts of the U.S. and populations from Latin America, the Marshall Islands, Somalia, Vietnam, Guatemala, and Sudan chasing opportunities from corporate recruiting from the poultry industry and retail companies.
